Chapter 18 - The Prey

Over the next few days, we found a comfortable routine. After depositing us at the library, Arack and Darya would continue to do their thing. Then, every early morning, Lyle and I would stumble home, completely bushed from having our heads buried in the books. We tried to keep our eyes open for any hunters, but didn't notice anyone, though to be honest I had a hard time finding my feet at that point. The knowledge that Darya and Arack had our backs trailing along somewhere behind us was a genuine relief. When we came home, we'd gather for a quick meal in the kitchen, talking a bit before going straight to bed. Then, when we got up, usually around late afternoon, we'd have a debrief, sharing our progress or lack of the same, while plotting what we'd focus on over the day after. We’d also dedicate some time to just goof around, play some music or games together, or discuss whatever came to mind. In short, apart from the unbearable tediousness of the research, we actually had a pretty damn good time.

"Oh, relax, Uncle. I've told you, I know what I'm doing. I won't get into trouble." It was the afternoon following our fourth night of studying and Darya had finished a breakfast run, surprising us with some sort of sugary fruit juice next to the life-giving nectar of burning hot coffee. Arack turned aside from her sketch of Morris to give me gray hairs.

I looked at the sketch, nodding in appreciation before responding.
